The sacraments give birth and increase, healing and mission to the Christian’s life of faith.
Baptism
The Sacrament of Baptism is usually celebrated monthly. We provide a preparation session for first-time parents and godparents the week prior to baptism. Parents must be currently registered at St. Joseph. Godparents are usually both practicing Catholics, a sponsor certificate is required of all godparents. A non-Catholic is permitted to be a Christian Witness and that person should provide a letter of membership from their Protestant church.
Confirmation
The Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated in the Spring, Freshman year in Grade 9 of religious education. The program involves parents, sponsors, retreats, apostolic service projects and full participation in the parish.
Adults who have not been confirmed are welcome to join an adult class in the Fall of each year and are confirmed in the Spring. We feature a modified Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) which involves candidates in parish life. Sponsors for Confirmation must be practicing Catholics and a sponsor certificate is required.
Eucharist
The Sacrament of the Eucharist (First Holy Communion) is celebrated in the Spring after two years of preparation. Parents are involved in several sessions during the year which feature themes explored in our puppet Masses on particular Sundays.
Adults who have been baptized but who have not received First Holy Communion can be involved in the Adult Confirmation class.
Penance
We celebrate the Sacrament of (First) Penance in the Fall. Children are prepared for the sacrament early in the First Communion program as directed by the US Bishops.
The Sacrament of Penance is available for all on Saturday from 4 to 4:45 PM or by appointment at the rectory. The annual parish mission during Lent usually provides a Celebration of Penance as well.
Sacrament of the Sick
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick can be celebrated with the family of the sick person. Private time is provided for Last Penance, but the family is encouraged to celebrate the anointing and prayers with their loved one. The sick person should be conscious to benefit from the love, support and comfort of these prayers. Do not wait until a person is in extremis. Call the rectory to arrange for a convenient time. Most hospitals and nursing homes provide chaplains on a regular basis. Check with the facility.
Matrimony
The Sacrament of Marriage is scheduled at least a year in advance to allow for adequate preparation and to arrange a venue for the reception. Pre-Cana sessions are required by the Diocese as well as a Sexuality Seminar. Certificates of Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation are submitted as well as the Pre-Cana Certificate. If any previous marriages existed (of any kind), these also must be addressed. Couples are expected to plan their wedding liturgy. Music for the Mass is arranged with the parish organist/music director.
Holy Orders
Anyone interested in becoming a priest should meet with Fr. Charlie as soon as possible.
